This book contains a checklist of 1162 dark films sorted in order of preference. The ranking is established by the sum of 8 ratings: stars, gimmick, rewatchability, story, creativity, acting, quality and creepiness. How many have you seen?
Vengeance is a fan-made old-fashioned Friday the 13th sequel. I recommend it to all fans of the franchise, as long as they understand it is a z movie. It has ambition, but it’s not as good as the films it pays homage to. There are copyright concerns at play that make this movie public domain. The writers did their homework, but instead of giving us something new, they recreate stuff we liked.
Vengeance is gorier than any of the previous installments, because it doesn’t have to deal with censorship and the MPAA. The only thing missing from this film, if the goal is to stick to the original material, is cheese. The story is way too serious and too convoluted. And exactly how do descendants of Jason’s victims end up in the same spot? Don’t overthink it. Focus on the boobs...
The mythos is too prominent. The film even went Rob Zombie on me, and that’s problematic. Most of this script rehashes murders we’ve already seen, which I doubt is what fans want. We want more of the same, but not the exact same. Jason looks like a million bucks. If I had to situate this movie in the franchise, solely on its vibe, I’d put it somewhere between 5 and 6, laptops and mobile excluded.
