Why are aliens so fond of humans that they go out of their ways to capture us and probe us? There’s a lot of probing in this film. The wraparound story reunites six people who have encountered aliens in a support group. The actors are convincing, and the stories are all compelling, which is no small achievement in the world of horror anthology films these days.
The opening segment is short and precipitated but sets the tone. The second story is the most ethereal one. The third one is the most suspenseful of the bunch. The last segment is the most human, down-to-earth, and intriguing one. The segments are standardized and feel part of a whole. This is crucial, yet so many recent anthologies have neglected this.
I’ve seen amazing, hectic stuff from the minds of Joe Castro and Steven J. Escobar. Here, they take their time. The build-up is organic. There’s as much exposition as you can get in an anthology format. The aliens come in different shapes and forms, and their design is always puzzling. The score, sound effects, and distorted imagery manage to debilitate us and plunge us into a fever dream.
