Gary J. Tunnicliffe does what he should’ve done, the first time around, and focuses on Cenobites other than Pinhead, since Doug Bradley isn’t reprising his role. The odds are against him, but he delivers a decent screenplay that relies a lot on ambiance, practical effects and editing. Hellraiser has always been about hell on Earth, and that’s what we get. But is it good?
The make-up is convincing, the production design simple but effective, the actors are competent, but this got butchered in post-production and I’m not sure how much of the compositing was planned from the beginning. There are way too many visions and hallucinations. This kind of lazy storytelling dates back to the 1990’s, when digital video became the new standard. It’s time to move on.
Hellraiser: Judgment is not Hellraiser: Revelations, but it’s not very good. It’s a collection of cool concepts and infernal imaginary, but, ultimately, it’s just another nail in the coffin of the franchise. The story is unclear, the exposition is neglected, the camera isn’t intimate and therefore we don’t care about the characters. There are surprises, along the way, but they fall flat.
