Well, that escalated quickly!
Not much can be said about Mother! that doesn’t spoil the whole thing. What starts like a psychological drama soon turns into a thriller and, eventually, into a horror movie. The main protagonist is played by Jennifer Lawrence whose life is ruined by constant visits from strangers. At first, it is somewhat mysterious, still plausible, but the situation eventually gets out of proportion.
Javier Bardem plays her husband, who we never really get to know intimately. Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer play smaller roles. They come and go. Without these big names, the film probably wouldn’t get attention. Mother! is a succession of allegories that are guaranteed to split the audience. Expect several jump scares and an escalating sensation that something "isn’t right".
The story is a combination of strange and unpleasant events that remind us of fever dreams. The camera movements are disturbing. The special effects are used wisely. We know we’re going to hit a twist, at some point, but most of us won’t be able to put our finger on it. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill horror flick. It takes pride in doing everything differently, for better or worse.
