Fully fleshed out!
It all starts with an unnecessarily brutal initiation that doesn’t look fun at all and sets a hostile context that will last until the end of the movie. This has got to be the longest initiation in the history of initiations. Of course, things get out of hand. Oddball virgin and vegetarian Justine has to eat raw meat, then gets a bad rash and gets very horny. Soon, she starts eating human flesh.
The film contains several gross moments involving blood, piss, vomit and shit. If it’s revulsive, it’s worth showing. The dialogue is well-written. It emphasizes the human side of characters who seem increasingly inhuman. The exposition isn’t stacked in the first scenes but distributed equally throughout the story. We never go from A to Z without visiting Y and Z.
Raw sensationalizes cannibalism, almost comparing it to vampirism. Writer and director Julia Ducournau treats it like a diseases but with a sexy angle. It feels like this movie could go on forever and never bore us. Whatever trajectory it had, at a certain point, it loses in the second half. There are no clear bad guys. There is no chance for redemption and no way to conclude this on a good note.
