We’ve come a long way since the classic Amicus Portmanteau series. Tales From the Lodge is a comedy, for one thing, and its exposition, in the wraparound segment, is thorough. This is another anthology film whose writer strives to stand out in a sea of anthology film makers, by changing the recipe, the tone, by twisting chronology, and, sometimes, consequently, by testing our patience.
The five segments are disconcertingly short, which is distracting when you expect structure. It’s easy to figure out what is being attempted, though. Don’t blink and you should be able to keep up with the main storyline. The characters are poorly assorted, and we never buy them as friends. The casting is questionable, and they don’t have an ounce of chemistry.
In the first story, a woman comes crashing into a windshield, for reasons unknown. In the second story, a woman is being stalked by something she brought back from a haunted place. The third story is about zombies. How original! In story four, a man is trapped in a cage and forced to watch a private show. The final story is super meta and super complicated. Enjoy!
