These days, it goes without saying, zombies are pretty much all running around while screaming in every movie they’re in. Hell, one is even sneaking around, climbing and running like a ninja, in Day of the Dead: Bloodline. Those are supposed to be Romero zombies and they’re nothing alike. On the other hand, fortunately, the make-up effects are impressive, and the gore looks real.
The most obvious ways this remake relates to the original Day of the Dead is through a military base and assholes dressed in camouflage uniforms that you can’t tell apart. Though the dialogue leaves a lot to be desired, the exposition is surprisingly entertaining when it isn’t just dreadful. The movie has more or less three introductions. They’re more interesting, in fact, than the main arc.
The previous remake of Day of the Dead didn’t look this good. The people behind this project are truly skilled. The only thing playing against this film is the script. When it’s not rehashing the ideas of the 1985 original, it plays out like any episode of the Walking Dead. At least, it’s not a remake in name only. The elements we loved so much in 1985 are reinterpreted, for better or worse.
