Doctor Frankenstein needs no introduction today, but his world was never depicted this way before. This is a dark steampunk science-fiction drama sprinkled with comedy and horror; a smart concoction and a fascinating formula. What’s more, while it mostly follows its own unique path, the movie contains many humorous nods to previous adaptations of the classic Mary Shelley novel.
We’re get one of the most hideous renditions of Frankenstein’s monster ever put on film: part-hyena, part-monkey and part-dog. This said, this is Frankenstein and Igor’s story and, contrary to most adaptations of this tale, there is no room for a sad monster. We get to experience the emotional, scientific, legal and political aspects of the human characters but the monster comes second.
Sympathetic and energetic, Radcliffe and McAvoy are an impressive duo that keeps us fascinated from beginning to end. The wardrobes, props and set design are sublime and contribute to an immersing experience that has us hooked. There are few slow moments but the pacing is generally tight and the ambiance is mostly tense. This is a stressful delight you won’t want to miss!
