The first two feature films, in this collection, were rich in practical effects, and this one is all digital. With this new installment, The Walt Disney Studios took something great and made it epic. Oz the Great and Powerful is aimed at children and people young at heart. It’s what happens when imagination is pushed to its limits. This is a legendary prequel to a legendary fairy tale.
When we think of a classic witch, with a pointy hat, crooked nose and a hideous green face, the antagonist, here, is who we refer to. This film is the Wicked Witch’s origin story. She’s played by Mila Kunis, her sister by Rachel Weisz, and Oz by James Franco, who can do no wrong. The movie is directed by Sam Raimi who does miracles with visuals so dense with detail we don’t know where to look.
This is an incredibly immersive experience. It is the result of a brilliant script that gets your head working, your heart pumping, and that ties all the lose ends of the 1939 classic, making those two films perfect companion pieces. How did the Wicked Witch become so evil? Why did she lead an army? How did Oz manage to fool a whole kingdom? It’s all explained here.
