If you like Pierce Brosnan, this pill should be easier to swallow. This is not the kind of novel easily adapted to screen. It is not a chronological story and it happens in Brosnan’s head. Not everything we see can be taken at face value. There are too many nightmares, flashbacks and hallucinations; too many things that may or may not have happened, that will or will not happen, and then some…
On a technical level, this is one of the better shot and edited Stephen King mini-series. It has the aesthetic of a feature film. But perhaps it should have been leaner. Bag of Bones is so convoluted and yet vapid that it should be an hour shorter. It’s not an epic like The Stand and The Langoliers. The scope is minuscule. This is one of Stephen King’s most selfish adaptations. It's not ours...
It’s about a troubled writer who gets increasingly troubled, and who has his personal ghosts… literally. In the midst of his mental struggle, he meets a singer he develops a fascination for. Of course, that’s all in his head. Perhaps this is the kind of flick you watch with hard liquor in hand. It’s all style and no substance. It has a strong atmosphere, it’s sad, tense, but it’s an empty bag.
