In Straw Dogs, an urban couple is engulfed by a vicious small town. This thriller is about jealousy, trust, domination, intimidation, rape and violence. It is the remake of a 1971 film by the same title based on a 1969 novel by Gordon Williams. The first film didn’t particularly need the update, but the refreshed cast doesn’t hurt. There are grade A actors, here, giving solid performances.
This is a frustrating story that makes us reflect on our lives. The two protagonists are easy to relate to, even though they are in constant conflict. We question ourselves and our perception of human relationships. The strong cast makes this simple thriller exciting. A rape scene occurs at the halfway mark that is filled with grey zones, making us uncomfortable, sad and terribly upset.
Unfortunately, this version is not as daring as its predecessor when it comes to taboos and nudity. It also shuffles its characters like a deck of cards to differ from the original movie. Both a quintessential home invasion and rape revenge flick, Straw Dogs reminds us of thrilling classics like The Last House on the Left and I Spit on Your Grave. One of the best of its kind, this is a must-see.
