The panic room the title refers to is a reinforced chamber, an urban nuclear shelter, sort of, and a way for residents to protect themselves against intruders. It doesn’t take long for our two main protagonists, Jodie Foster’s character and her kid, to receive a visit from thieves after moving in, and the rest of this story pretty much writes itself. This is a simple movie with a big budget.
When Jodie Foster’s character learns about the Panic Room from the real estate agent, it’s as if she’s aware that she’s a character in a modern thriller. It’s as if something bad already happened. Jodie Foster, Kristen Stewart, Forest Whitaker and Jared Leto are amazing in this. They even surpass what the dialogue asks of them. The other actors are forgettable.
David Fincher has a way of suspending time and therefore making a nerve-racking moment last painfully longer. The camera work is amazing. You can’t guess how certain shots were made. It travels through keyholes, small objects and walls to give us a perspective of the giant house we’re in. As big as it is, we have an understanding of how the place is built.
