This film starts the way half the Full Moon films start, by contemplating an immobile monster that we’ll see more of, at some point. This is cool and all, but it gives the best element away. It works in the Puppet Master franchise. Doesn’t work here. The gimmick is explained to us in the first ten minutes by characters who should be clueless and know a little too much for this all to make sense.
There is more to Totem than its initial premise. The movie tells the story of a handful of young people stuck in a magical dimension, and it’s also about three wooden statues... and a cursed totem. Haunted graveyard? Check! Cabin in the woods? Check! Jocks in tank tops? You got it! This is directed by David DeCoteau, so you get annoying extreme camera angles and gliding cameras movements to intensify shots that aren’t that exciting to start with. If you’re looking for fine puppetry, good acting, genuine frights and a strong script, look elsewhere.
