Plot
Ewan McGregor is convincing as the night security guard in charge of a morgue who’s never quite aware of his environment and doesn’t get his shit together, before he even has a reason to worry. Josh Brolin is a royal asshole, and he owns all his scenes. Patricia Arquette is in a perpetual state of melancholy, Brad Dourif looks crazy, and Nick Nolte looks suspicious as hell.
The atmosphere is so thick, in the morgue, you could cut it with a knife. If you have no clue what this film is about, get ready to be manipulated and fooled. The less you know, the better. The script is filled with captivating tangents and vivid dialogue scenes that propel and escalate the intrigue. It’s a bit of a whodunit, too. Surely this stellar casting will pay off in the third act!
Dan Laustsen’s photography is intimate but cold, claustrophobic; black backdrops, strong shadows, orange midtones, and it’s skillfully leveraged by director Ole Bornedal’s style. Conceptually, visually, and acoustically, Nightwatch is impeccable. It’s the remake of a successful film called Nattevagten. Ole Bornedal directed both installments, so this gets his approval.
