There’s only one villain, here, but when it comes to antagonizing characters, everyone has their turn. The townsfolk, in this film, aren’t exactly geniuses, aren’t all angels, and it’s probably the reason store owner Leland Gaunt chose this corner of the world to conduct his business. He trades expensive items against evil deeds, which eventually turns all his clients against one another.
This is one of these Stephen King adaptations with emphasis on dialogue, with abnormal characters and with questionable photography. It wasn’t made for TV, but it feels like it. It’s not the best nor the worst we’ve seen of King, but it’s an entertaining story. Sadness multiplied by terror creates heavy atmosphere, when done right, and Needful Things is a perfect example.
Competently made, thrilling, surprising and colorful in its bleakness, this movie tells the stories of people that are either deeply materialistic, nostalgic, or concerned for their health. It reminds us of our dark side, of the things buried deep inside. The film is also about God and the Devil. It’s about a genie versus a policeman. It’s about good versus evil. It’s an eccentric crescendo.
