Silent Night, Deadly Night 3 was a first attempt at supernatural horror from a weak franchise that needed to be saved and only got more complicated instead. Initiation is a sequel by name only and delivers a story closer to 1968’s Rosemary’s Baby and every dark cult movie with sexual undertones ever made. There are phallic symbols and plenty of worms, here, but no evil Santa in sight.
The protagonists are mostly female and men are depicted as orbiting pigs. It’s a mix of voodoo horror and of classic haunted house tropes. The actors are decent and the director is competent, but the production feels rushed and treated with little attention to detail. The procedural is not that interesting but at least hints at Wicca, kinks and lesbianism to create somewhat intriguing filler.
This is a compilation of intense moments that don’t blend well together. It’s nothing the editing can’t make worse, sadly. In fact, the disjointed narrative only clusters a mystery we never feel compelled to solve because it relies so much on improvised editing. This isn't a slasher and it can’t be considered Christmas-themed either. It’s a bad sequel and a forgettable stand-alone horror film.
