Plot
In a typical slasher, dumb teenagers are sympathetic because they are written as well-intentioned people destined to die prematurely. Here, they are a heavy caricature of archetypes rebels hate in society. Between street gangs, businessmen and bodybuilders, nobody gets a clean image. Nobody’s likable; not even the underdeveloped health club janitor whose superhero backstory this film represents.
The lines are poorly delivered and probably not rehearsed much. Extras don’t blend in well, move too much and the brutal editing helps in no way character authenticity. The audio is bad and the dubbing is an asynchronous mess. On the other hand, it is interesting to witness a self-unaware movie do so many wrongs, yet still carry on with its story the way a structured production would.
The dialogue is simply atrocious but you can’t help but keep watching because you know you’ll never get to see this instant cult classic with virgin eyes again. There’s plenty of nudity and sex, cross-dressing, people badly or barely dressed, taboos, and other shocking subjects or imagery for subversive audiences to feast on. In a nutshell, The Toxic Avenger is your ultimate leftist horror icon.
