Plot
On paper, this is one exciting story. Half-man, half-fish hybrids terrorize a fishing village. The end result is a little stiff, though. There’s gore, there are breasts; what there isn’t is a protagonist to root for. I couldn’t give a damn about anyone in this. The humanoids referred to in the title look like men in rubber suits, but it’s still better than computer-generated monsters.
Humanoid from the Deep feels like a Creature from the Black Lagoon sequel, but with controversial stuff that you couldn’t show in the 1950s. It’s brutal, revolting, and sexy. Those characters, though, are frigging boring. They are too many alpha males. How are we supposed to worry for such a rigid cast? No one is smiling, no one’s laughing, and people are constantly arguing.
A lot of this movie takes place in, under, and around water, which becomes a signature. Aside the sky being grey at all times, the scenery is beautiful. The creators went out of their ways to submerge us. You’ll have to wait until the third act for Humanoids from the Deep to reach its full potential. All hell, then, breaks loose. Your patience will be rewarded.
