Whatever this film sets out to do, it only dips its toe and chickens out. It presents itself as a whodunit, but it doesn’t follow through. The antagonists wear fancy masks that they don’t deserve, considering how expandable they are. There are twists ahead but they are far-fetched and pretty much an insult for the average audience. The film looks professional, though, and it's well shot.
What starts out like a home invasion flick soon turns into much more. You’re Next is an eccentric movie that is shot skillfully but written immaturely. It reminds us of pictures of the 1980’s and 1990’s, and it’s definitely one for the fans, but it tries way too much. There is no gimmick here. And, no, white masks aren’t a valid gimmick in 2011, anymore. Black hoods would've been enough.
That being said, You’re Next is entertaining from beginning to end. The actors are convincing. The characters are different without being caricatures. We buy their chemistry, however complex, considering these are the extended members of a family. The ending is predictable for whoever looks deeply enough at the details. Once passed the inciting event, this story pretty much writes itself.
