High on thrills, special effects and martial art combat, this extreme take on the Godzilla formula gets your attention right from the start. It is being made clear, now, that Mecha pilots are a well-trained hand-picked bunch. It makes them heroic and, after all this time, an actual contributing part of the plot. This consequently sets the tone for the most action-packed Godzilla sequel up to now.
Godzilla, Gigan, Mothra, Rodan, Anguirus, King Ghidorah, King Caesar, Kamacuras, Kumonga and Ebirah all reunite, pick and take over their favorite metropolis, destroying everything in their path. Sounds familiar? It was the premise in 1968’s Destroy All Monsters and it is reproduced here, but upped a notch. This plays out beautifully, supported by an excellent omnipresent action score.
Structured like a video game, Final Wars is indubitably among the most extreme additions in the franchise. It is either a dream or a nightmare come true for the hardcore fan, though, as it makes a left turn with its human aspect, giving us something else than discussion by static actors. This feels like the culmination of the things we once considered visionary in Godzilla history.
