This movie piggybacks on the success of Scream. This metro-sexual slasher comes out one year after its cousin, but feels like a lesser version of it. The intrigue leads to a revelation that can’t live up to better plausible slashers. The lead actors do a convincing job with the superficial dialog they are given. They are some of the best of their generation and the main attraction, here.
Some might recognize an underlying pattern that will remind them of the Hookman urban legend. The villain has a hook for a hand and the plot revolves around disturbed love stories, but the parallels stop there. IKWYDLS doesn't always know what it wants to be. It implicitly invites us to try and guess the killer’s identity, but eventually gives up red herrings and neglects its final reveal.
The body count is surprisingly low and gore isn't the focus; disorderly teen relationships are. Some subplots feel stretched, far-fetched, and do not contribute much to the course of the story. The novel this is based on is only vaguely similar, but is also aimed at a younger crowd. This is a good gateway horror movie with a strong social layer that succeeds in making us care for its characters.
